Magnolia Saloon 2013

New Settee Cushions = Bighter Saloon

Sometimes this Seamless Sailor decides a project is beyond her skill set or available time.  I had decided that the plaid settee covers on Magnolia, while still in good shape, didn't represent the look we wanted to create for our new home.  We wanted to make our imprint on our boat.  I wanted Ultraleather settees - sleek and durable.  The captain agreed to my extravagant choice.  After we had a positive experience having our enclosure remade by Captain Canvas, we had him redo the settees.  Again he did a fabulous job. We wanted a tough fabric that could be easily cleaned.  The trade-off - cost.  Ultraleather is pricey.   We look at it as an investment in livability on the boat.  And at the time we were both working. Sitting in the Catbird Seat

Recently both Good Old Boat and Sailrite provided ideas for covering pushpit rails and catbird seats.  Simple and straightforward, you too could be sitting pretty. Good Old Boat (March/April 2013 issue) had an article on covering catbird seats by Clarence Jones that is easy enough for a non sewer. He used iron on fabric mending tape to create the seams and snaps to hold the cover on. Sailrite just did a video too.  They sewed the hems and used Velcro to fasten the cover. They both used home foam insulation underneath. Either way would make a nice comfortable perch for any catbird. They had stars on one side. Like looking up to the stars, but we were inside? We have grown to like our hatch pillows so much that we are remaking them to match our new decor.  These pillows are made of foam cut to fit the inside of the hatch area and covered in outdoor fabric (Robert Allen - Gales Point) and Sunbrella. They keep out light at marinas and eliminate a bright full moon at anchor for sleep.  These pillows also provide a bit of insulation with a bit of breath-ability so there isn't too much heat Read more [...]
